How To: Smoke a pipe

Smoke a pipe

This video from Silverchairbookstore shows us how to smoke a pipe. He first gives some tips on purchasing our first pipe. Not to buy the most expensive ones but to look in the bargain bin and get one fairly inexpensively. You will have to choose a straight stem or curved stem, there is not much difference in the pipe smoking experience with either, mostly personal preference. You will need a pipe tool, only a few dollars and a tool to clean your pipe and also pipe cleaners. Next you must pick your tobacco. He suggests something aromatic. He likes English tobacco but not so much for beginners. He then proceeds to explain the way to pack a pipe. Using the pipe bowl to scoop the tobacco into the pipe, then take your pipe tool to pat it down gently. The first scoop should be patted as gently as you would squeeze a baby's hand. Very gently. Then scoop again with the pipe and pat down a second time, this time as gently as you would squeeze a lady's hand. Gently still, but not as soft. Then scoop a third time with the pipe and pat down again, this time patting as gently as you would squeeze a man's hand. Firmer than before. At this point you should have a well packed pipe. Now to the lighting of the pipe. First make sure you are getting a smooth draw by puffing the unlit pipe. When lighting the pipe use matches. Keep drawing until you get a nice even burn. Sometimes after the initial light you may need to neaten up the tobacco. Pat down gently with the pipe tool while still puffing on the stem. Well, that's it. Enjoy your pipe.
